Summariser:
AS the days kept on going by Topthorn and Joeys health became worse because they were doing tougher work and being fed less food. Soon as spring arrived they were placed under the command of a kind soldier known as Crazy Old Friedrich. Topthorn became weaker every day but still was able to survive, eventually one day, in failing health; he stumbles and falls to the ground. He did not get up again; Joey had lost his best and dearest friend forever. Joey, Friendrich and other soldiers gathered sadly around Topthorn, shells began to rain down upon them. Everyone scattered, but Joey refused to leave his best friend behind. Friendrich tried to drag Joey to safety. He finally lets go of Joeys reins and tries to make his own escape, but failed and died a short distance away from topthorn. Joey remained there with the bodies of his friends day and night. One day Joey had no choice but had to leave and get to safety, he said goodbye to his beloved friends and set off. Joey hears a voice and runs towards it, it was a man in a gay uniform and he was a German soldier, then suddenly a British soldier in a khaki uniform appears and they both want to have Joey for a companion, they eventually decide to toss a coin and the British soldier wins and has Joey as a companion. War Horse 5 questions: 1. Who came to Joeys and Topthorns rescue when they were first captured? 2. Who discovered Joey and Topthorn settled in an old barn after their work? 3. What if Emilie’s grandfather got pneumonia instead of her? 4. What if Emilie had died? 5. What was Emilie’s complaint to her grandfather about the two horses? Connector:
I would relate chapters 7-8 about the others dogs who also went to war and lost there owners and then were accompanied by new owners. Discussion director
